Vema Hydrogen, KHIMOD, and the SAF+ International Group are partnering to produce synthetic sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for Canada’s aerospace industry

• The agreement is the first integrated commercial model to pair mineral synthesis hydrogen (MSH) with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). It aims to increase the supply of SAF and reduce barriers to its adoption.

Montreal, Canada — July 7, 2026 — Today, Vema Hydrogen announced a memorandum of understanding with SAF+ International Group, an international developer of sustainable aviation fuel made from low-carbon hydrogen and captured CO₂. As part of its Mineral Synthesis Hydrogen (MSH) project in Quebec, Vema will supply more than 4,000 tons of hydrogen per year starting in 2028. Together with KHIMOD’s technological participation using Vema’s MSH, they will demonstrate a new, scalable pathway for producing synthetic SAF designed to be replicated in aviation markets worldwide.

Global aviation produces over 880 million tons of carbon emissions annually, accounting for 2-2.5% of all human-caused emissions. This figure could surge to 25% by 2050 if no action is taken. To address this enormous challenge, airlines are turning to sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs). Currently, these fuels are expensive and in limited supply, leaving airlines without access to the volumes needed to meet their decarbonization targets. This partnership aims to close that gap by introducing a new, cost-effective source of hydrogen capable of supporting large-scale synthetic SAF production.

SAF+IG, a pioneer in synthetic SAF fuel production, utilizes a lower-cost, low-carbon hydrogen solution called MSH that goes beyond purely electrolytic pathways. By locating SAF+IG’s production plant next to Vema’s hydrogen facility, the project eliminates transportation costs and reduces supply chain risk, two key challenges in the energy market. MSH will be injected directly into the process at SAF+IG’s plant, supporting the production of synthetic SAF for regional airlines and future customers in Quebec’s emerging SAF market.

SAF+IG will use KHIMOD’s modular reactor technology to convert this hydrogen into fuel, marking KHIMOD’s first deployment in North America. KHIMOD is a French climate technology company. Its compact, modular reactor is designed to minimize production costs without sacrificing efficiency.
